Our Curriculum
At Bradshaw Primary School, we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage and National Curriculum as the framework for our curriculum offer. However, we have carefully designed, organised and developed our curriculum to ensure that every child receives a rich, ambitious and inclusive education that prepares them for lifelong learning and success in an ever-changing world.
Our curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity, creativity and confidence while developing knowledgeable, independent and resilient learners. We believe that every child has the right to a broad and balanced curriculum that values both academic achievement and personal development. Through carefully planned and sequenced learning experiences, children deepen and embed their knowledge, make meaningful links across subjects and develop the skills they need to thrive both in school and beyond.
At the heart of our curriculum is a strong emphasis on communication and language, personal, social and emotional development (PSED), and the foundational skills in reading, writing and mathematics. We know that secure foundations are essential for future success, and we prioritise the development of confident communicators, enthusiastic readers and fluent mathematicians from the very beginning of their school journey. Our approach ensures children gain ‘sticky’ knowledge that is retained over time and applied across a range of contexts.
In Early Years and Key Stage 1, we use Little Wandle to deliver high-quality phonics and spelling teaching, ensuring children develop strong early reading and writing skills. In our Early Years provision, writing is further supported through EY2P (Early Years to Primary), which helps children to develop early composition, transcription and confidence in mark-making and writing. Across school, English is enriched through Pathways to Read, Write and Spell, exposing children to high-quality texts that broaden vocabulary, deepen understanding and foster a love of literature. Through this mastery approach, children progressively develop their language, punctuation and grammar skills with confidence and purpose. We also use Letter-join as our handwriting curriculum to support fluent, legible and well-presented written work.
In mathematics, we follow a mastery approach using White Rose Small Steps as a consistent and progressive framework. This is enhanced through Mastering Number and Number Sense sessions in our younger year groups to ensure that strong number knowledge and fluency are firmly embedded and built upon over time.
Alongside academic learning, we place great importance on children’s personal development and wellbeing. We have developed a bespoke behaviour and PSED curriculum which supports children to become respectful, responsible and emotionally aware individuals. We aim to ensure that all children feel valued, experience success and develop the confidence to contribute positively to their communities.
Our curriculum extends beyond the classroom through enrichment opportunities, educational visits, visitors and wider experiences that bring learning to life and provide context and purpose. We prioritise all subjects equally, recognising that deep learning develops when knowledge is connected and applied in different ways. This enables children to become curious, self-led learners who can think critically and make sense of the world around them.
Through our curriculum, we aim to develop children who are:
- Confident communicators and enthusiastic learners
- Curious, creative and resilient thinkers
- Knowledgeable citizens with an understanding of the wider world
- Respectful, kind and responsible members of society
- Lifelong learners who are equipped for their future education and lives
